What is TA-Banks 5?
The TA-Banks 5 index tracks Israel’s five large banks. It is a highly concentrated sector index, only five stocks, so it behaves differently from a broad index: when something happens to banking, it moves far more than TA-125.
How it affects you
Two things make it relevant even if you don’t hold it directly. First, bank stocks carry heavy weight inside TA-35 and TA-125, so your pension is exposed to them anyway. Second, the index is unusually sensitive to the Bank of Israel rate: higher rates widen banks’ lending spreads, and vice versa.
How to read this number
This is a sector index, not a substitute for diversification. Investing in five stocks from one industry is a focused bet on that industry, not a portfolio core. When it jumps while the broad market is flat, the cause is usually a rate decision or quarterly earnings.

Frequently asked
Expand/collapse: Is it worth investing in a banks index?
There is no blanket answer, and this is not advice. What matters: a five-stock, single-sector index carries concentrated industry risk, regulation, a rate decision or a credit crisis hit all of them at once. Many investors prefer exposure through a broad index, where banks already carry meaningful weight.
Expand/collapse: Why does the banks index move when the Bank of Israel rate changes?
Banks earn mainly on the spread between the rate they charge on credit and the rate they pay on deposits. When the policy rate rises, that spread tends to widen and profitability improves.
