Average Wage
The basis for social-security and benefit calculations. Also a useful benchmark.
Historical trend
What is Average Wage?
The average gross monthly wage of an employed worker in the economy, as published by Israel's CBS. This is a simple average that includes all sectors — high-tech, defense, education, healthcare, retail, and all the rest.
How it affects you
The average wage is the basis for National Insurance benefits (unemployment, work injury, survivor pensions, etc.). It is also the basis for pension contribution ceilings. If your wage is significantly above the average, you may be paying the high-income surtax.
How to read this number
Important to distinguish between "average" and "median" wage — the median (~9,000 NIS) is much lower than the average (~13,000 NIS), because high salaries pull the average up. The median better represents "what a typical worker earns".
